Searching the Web Without Getting Lost

A gentle guide to finding good stuff (without falling into a cat video spiral)

Hello again!

The internet is a lot like a giant library. Except instead of quiet reading rooms, there are pop-up ads, dancing raccoons, and 14 million answers to every question.

But don’t worry. In this post, we’ll show you how to search the internet without feeling overwhelmed, how to find what you need, and how to tell if something is helpful or… well, full of beans.

You’ve already got curiosity, common sense, and life experience. That’s what good searchers use! Let’s build on that.

Skills to Focus On

Using a Search Engine (like Google or DuckDuckGo)

  • A search engine is a website that helps you find other websites.
  • Go to www.google.com or www.duckduckgo.com
  • Type in your question or topic, like:
how to cook lentils or rent support in Nova Scotia

Be Specific

  • More details = better results. Instead of “jobs,” try:
    part-time cleaning jobs Halifax 2024
  • You can also use quotes for exact matches:
    \"Nova Scotia tenant rights\"

Picking a Good Link

  • Look for websites you’ve heard of (libraries, .orgs, news outlets)
  • Skip ones with too many pop-ups, fake buttons, or suspicious headlines like \”Doctors hate this fruit!\”

Trust Your Gut

  • If something seems off, it might be. Trust your instincts.
  • Want a second opinion? Search the same question on another site.

Practice & Play: Try This!

The Backpack Challenge
Let’s say you’re getting ready for a trip and need to pack.

  • Go to DuckDuckGo or Google
  • Search: what to pack for a weekend trip in fall
  • Click on one result and write down 3 items you wouldn’t have thought of
  • Bonus: Try searching the same thing with the words “Nova Scotia” added. What changed?

You just searched, compared results, and learned something useful. That’s digital literacy in action!

Quick Tips

  • Ads are often the first few results. Look for the little “Ad” label.
  • If you get stuck, try changing a word in your search.
  • Got too many results? Add more details. Got none? Try fewer.
